Meeting the discerning tastes of today's consumers

Meat Standards Australia (MSA) was developed to predict the eating quality of Australian red meat. It is a grading system designed to improve the supply of consistently high-quality meat to the end consumer.

The MSA system grades the quality of each cut of meat based on its tenderness, juiciness, flavour and overall liking. The grade can be 3, 4 or 5 star and each cut is labelled accordingly. It is based on almost 800,000 consumer taste tests by more than 114,000 consumers across 11 countries.

It is a system that has paved the way for producers all over the world with many, like the EU red meat industry, acknowledging that a system like MSA which predicts the palatability of red meat can help better meet consumer expectations.

As well as setting examples for red meat industries across the world, MSA also ensures that importers of Australian red meat across the EU can rest easy in the knowledge that the product they receive will be to the taste of local consumers.

The Australian red meat industry is working hard to ensure our producers continue to meet rigorous consumer expectations around sustainably produced, safe, high quality product from animals whose welfare has been a top priority throughout their lives. MSA is just one of the systems that puts Australia at the forefront of meeting these increasingly stringent demands.
