What is the livestock production assurance (LPA) programme?

The LPA is a programme for the Australian livestock industry that ensures food safety, animal welfare, and biosecurity.

It allows our farmers to stand by what they sell and guarantee that their products are produced ethically and safely. The LPA ensures a clear chain of history when transferring livestock and makes sure producers within the programme are on the same page.

The LPA is independently audited, and over 215’000 farms voluntarily take part. LPA-accredited farms are committed to maintaining an integrity-based system, as well as sustainable, safe, and ethical on-farm practices.

There are seven aspects of the LPA programme which, taken together, play a large part in ensuring Australia’s reputation as a reliable, high-quality exporter of ethically produced meat to trade partners such as the EU:

  • Property risk assessments

Ensuring that livestock are not exposed to anything which may harm their health.

  • Safe and responsible animal treatments

If animal treatments are not responsibly put into place, livestock may suffer, and food safety may be compromised. All our customers expect livestock to be treated responsibly.

  • Stock foods, fodder crops, grain and pasture treatments

Livestock must eat food that is safe, or else there is a risk to their welfare and food safety. We work to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

  • Preparation for dispatch of livestock

Ensuring that all livestock are fit-to-load is a critical part of our animal welfare and food safety process.

  • Livestock transactions and movements

Ensuring that all livestock are fully traceable helps us maintain animal welfare, biosecurity, and food safety, while providing valuable information to our customers.

  • Biosecurity

All participating farms are expected to uphold preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission of any infectious disease, invasive pests, or weeds, both on farm and during transport.

  • Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is enshrined Australian law, ensuring that we produce high quality meat and creating a more ethical and sustainable red meat industry.
