ANIMAL WELFARE

Australian red meat producers are well aware of their responsibilities towards their animals, and recognise that livestock care is fundamental to the success and sustainability of every farm, transporter, and processor.

That’s why the Australian red meat industry is committed to maintaining a high level of animal welfare practices, ensuring that all our livestock are well cared-for.

Animal protection is also enshrined in Australian law. Our animal welfare legislation is in line with World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines, and is equal to, and in some cases more stringent than, European regulation in this area.

MLA, working with government and the whole red meat industry supply chain, has set up several systems to provide guidance on animal welfare, and ensure that our high standards are maintained. They outline fully auditable welfare criteria to guide producers at every stage of the supply chain.

We also recognise the social and ethical obligation to continually deliver improvements to environmental, animal welfare and food safety practices. That’s why MLA invests millions of dollars per year into research in these areas.
